Split a Bill 8 Ways: Equal, Exact, Percent, Shares, Itemised and More

· 1 min read · By the Contriii team

Equal splits are quick, but they are not always fair. Contriii has eight split methods, including equal, exact, percent, shares, itemised and multi-payer, so the maths matches what actually happened. Here are the main ones and when to use each.

1. Equal

Everyone pays the same. Best for shared cabs, group snacks and simple dinners.

2. Exact amounts

Type what each person owes. Best when you already know the numbers, like a shared phone plan with different add-ons.

3. Percentages

Split 60/40 or 70/30. Useful for rent when one room is larger, or when one person covers more of a gift.

4. Shares

Give each person a number of shares. A couple counts as two, a solo traveller as one. Perfect for groups with mixed sizes.

5. Itemised

Assign each dish or item to whoever had it. Tax and tip are spread in proportion. This ends the "I only had a salad" debate.

6. Multiple payers

Two or more people paid part of the bill. Each payer is credited correctly so nobody is out of pocket by accident.

Bonus: recurring bills

Rent, Wi-Fi and subscriptions repeat every month. Recurring bills and recurring group expenses post themselves on the due date, split with the flat automatically, with a reminder the day before.

How to choose

Whichever method you choose, record the payer immediately and settle in one payment later. See how to split expenses with friends in India for the full routine, or join the Contriii waitlist.
