How to split expenses with friends

Record the amount, who paid and who took part. Agree on equal shares or individual amounts before calculating who owes whom. A person who paid the bill can still owe their own share.

For example, Aarav pays ₹1,800 for dinner for three people. Each share is ₹600, so the other two each owe Aarav ₹600. If Meera then pays ₹300 for a cab for the same three people, each owes ₹100 for the cab. Combining both bills, Meera owes Aarav ₹500 and the third friend owes Aarav ₹700. These two transfers settle the total ₹2,100.

For unequal bills, enter each person’s items first, then agree how to divide tax and tips. Exclude anyone who did not participate. Record a settlement only after the payment is confirmed; calculating a debt does not transfer money.

How to track UPI transactions without double counting

Start with a weekly review of bank statements and payment history. Give each expense a date, amount, account and category. Moving ₹2,000 between your own accounts is a transfer, not a new expense. A refund should reduce the original spending category.

Separate personal spending from money paid on behalf of a group. In the dinner example, Aarav’s personal expense is ₹600, even though ₹1,800 left his account. The remaining ₹1,200 is money owed by friends. Keeping both views helps explain why your account balance and personal spending total differ.

When choosing an automatic expense tracker, check what data it reads, whether you can correct categories, and how to export or delete your records. Never share your UPI PIN to track expenses.

Plan a shared trip budget before booking

For a four-person trip, a sample budget might be ₹12,000 for accommodation, ₹8,000 for transport, ₹6,000 for food and ₹4,000 for activities: ₹30,000 total, or ₹7,500 each. A separate ₹3,000 contingency adds ₹750 per person if you decide to fund it upfront.

Keep estimated costs separate from paid expenses. Record booking deposits when paid, and only add the remaining balance later. For cancellations, record refunds against the original payer and recalculate each person’s share. Personal shopping belongs outside the group budget.

A trip expense planner helps with budgets and shared costs. Check separately whether a product offers itinerary planning, travel reservations or navigation; these are different jobs.
