Sending money to a friend on UPI takes ten seconds. Remembering what it was for, and whether it clears the balance, takes longer. Here is how to settle up cleanly.
Net out first, pay once
If you owe Riya 800 and she owes you 300, the answer is one payment of 500, not two. In a group, an app can work out the smallest set of transfers that clears everyone. That means fewer payments, fewer screenshots and fewer "did you get it?" messages.
Pay in your own UPI app
Contriii does not hold or move your money and never asks for your UPI PIN. You open Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or your bank app, send the exact amount shown, and come back. This is on purpose: your money stays under your bank's protection.
Mark it settled straight away
Once the payment goes through, mark the balance as settled. Partial settle-ups are supported too, so paying part of what you owe is recorded correctly.
Add a note
"Goa villa share" beats "Riya" in a bank statement three months later. A short note makes tax time, reimbursements and disputes easier.
Use a reminder when someone forgets
A polite nudge with the exact amount is easiest on WhatsApp. See how to send money reminders without sounding harsh.
Check the amount before you tap
UPI payments are irreversible once sent. Double-check the name, amount and the note. If you are splitting a large bill, settle in one go after the group is confirmed.
Keep one source of truth
The point of settling in an expense app is that everyone sees the same number. Start with how to split expenses with friends and keep one group per crew.
