Most people do not mind paying a friend back. They just forget. The trick is a reminder that is easy to act on and impossible to take offence at.
What makes a reminder work
- The exact amount. "Rs 850 for Saturday's dinner" beats "you owe me for dinner".
- The context. Name the event so it is obvious.
- A way to act. Your UPI ID or a link so they can pay in seconds.
- A light tone. A little humour does more than a formal request.
Example messages
Hey Arav, quick one: Rs 850 for Saturday's dinner. Paying whenever you're free, no rush!
Goa trip final tally: you owe Rs 2,150. Pay on UPI and we're square.
Timing
Send the first nudge two or three days after the expense, when memory is fresh. If there is no response, a second nudge a week later is fine. After that, ask in person.
Let the app do the awkward part
In Contriii, one tap sends a polite WhatsApp nudge with the amount filled in, at most once a day, so nobody feels chased.
Avoid these mistakes
- Reminding in a big group chat. Send it privately.
- Vague amounts or no context.
- Waiting months. Old debts feel harder to raise.
Keep balances visible
When everyone can see the group balance, fewer reminders are needed. Start with a clear group and split method, and settle with a single UPI payment.
